Sommelier // Sommeliers Burgundy Grand Cru // Set of 2
The Burgundy Grand Cru glass is perfect to support the balance of fragility and fresh compact fruit in light-bodied wines. Developed in 1958, its shape represented a quantum leap in terms of wine glass design and has earned it a place in the permanent display of the New York Museum of Modern Art. Decanter magazine described it as "The finest Burgundy glass of all time, suitable for both young and old Burgundies." This 'beautiful monster' of a glass can take apart a lesser wine, mercilessly showing up its weaknesses. But a great wine—a top-class Burgundy, Barolo or Barbaresco—will be revealed in all its glory.
The large bowl allows the bouquet to develop to the full, while the slightly flared top lip maximizes the fruit flavors by directing a precise flow onto the front palate. The wide tulip shape and slightly flared lip highlights the irresistible sweetness, whilst perfectly balancing the acidity and deemphasizing the alcohol, to create a perfect picture of the wine. Certain wines and grape varieties require this type of controlled delivery. By ensuring that the fruit is highlighted while using the marked acidity of the wine to keep the flavors in balance, this is a glass that produces a superbly three-dimensional 'taste picture'.
The Sommeliers series was a design revolution created by Claus J. Riedel (9th generation). The range adheres to the Bauhaus design principle of form follows function, as Claus J. Riedel had discovered that certain wines showed more depth and better balance when enjoyed from certain shapes. Thin-blown and unadorned, Sommeliers was the beginning of Riedel's dominance of the global wine glass market. Their master glassmakers individually craft each item so every piece has a unique character.
