One of the First Times Jesus Christ was depicted on a coin! Byzantine Empire. Reign of John I, 969 - 976 AD. A bronze follis. The front depicts the bust of Christ facing, holding the book of Gospels, +EMMANOVHA IX-XC around. The back reads IҺSЧS/ XRISTЧS/ ЬASILЄЧ/ ЬASILЄ ("Jesus Christ King of Kings") in four lines, with ornament above and below. Reference: Sear SB 1812 for type. Coin diameter 21mm, weighs 8.79 grams. Dark olive-green patina, nice detail. Grades Fine to Very Fine.
