Spanish Copper "Pirate" Coin // Circa 1605-1665
Product Description
A true “Pirate Coin”! This is one counterfeit Spanish copper 8-maravedis “cob” of King Philippe IV, 1605-1665 AD. However, this is a counterfeit coin made in the mid-1600’s, undoubtedly created by pirates… at a time when counterfeiting was a capital crime punishable by death, only the most hardened and fearless criminal personalities would partake in such an operation. This was found as part of a hoard of counterfeit coins of this type, likely hidden by pirates before being raided and discovered, never to be claimed thereafter. These coins depicts his bust, inscription FELIPE IIII DG around / The other side with the Spanish coat-of-arms on a shield with crown, inscription HISPANIARVM REX around. Each coin measures about 0.5 inch in diameter, some a bit larger, with nice detail and deep coppery tone. Every coin is unique but very similar in appearance and condition. The coin you receive might be slightly different than the example photographed. Ex De Père, WI collection. Accompanied by a hand-signed certificate of authenticity which includes all the details, culture, dating, motifs/inscriptions when applicable, historical relevance, and provenance.
